Formation and Transformation of Clay Minerals: the Role of Bacteria
نویسنده
چکیده
Bacteria are the most abundant forms of life we know on our planet that can be able to survive in a variety of habitats, from hot to cold springs, from soils to deep sedimentary rocks, in radioactive wastes and in living organisms. It has been estimated (Whitman et al., 1998; Lipp et al., 2008) that the prokaryote number is 3.5 5.0·1030 and although global subseafloor sedimentary microbial abundance has been recently reduced to 2.9·1029 (Kallmeyer et al., 2012), number of these single-celled organisms remain truly impressive and their mass exceeds that of all plants and animals on Earth. Therefore to modelling mineral equilibria it is imperative to take into account the presence of bacteria in geological environments.

Loess/soil sequences have been proven to be excellent paleoclimate indicators. Large areas of northern Iran are covered by loess deposits which provide a good condition to carry out research on paleoclimate, paleosols and discontinuities. The objectives of this research were to identify clay minerals of soil-loess sequences, to determine the role of climate change in clay mineral transform...

Clay minerals are considered the most important components of clastic reservoir rock evaluation studies. The Shurijeh gas reservoir Formation, represented by shaly sandstones of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age, is the main reservoir rock in the Eastern Kopet-Dagh sedimentary Basin, NE Iran. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopic (S...

Paddy soils provide the staple diet for nearly half of the world's population. The formation of the Anthrosols is induced by tilling the wet soil (puddling), flooding and drainage regimes associated with the development of a plow pan and specific redoximorphic features. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-term rice cultivation on physico-chemical properties and clay mineralo...

Paleosols provide invaluable paleoclimatic data especially in arid regions. Buried paleosols are found in central Iran. Givdary alluvial fan, south of Rafsanjan, was selected for paleosols study. Soil moisture and temperature regimes of the area are aridic and mesic, respectively. Based on paleosols' identification criteria, four paleosol layers at the depths of 15, 20, 45, and 50 m from th...

Weathering of K-bearing minerals as the major source of potassium in soils is of special importance under K deficient conditions. Many studies have been carried out on the effect of plant types and microorganisms on the transformation of micaeous minerals and their potassium release. However, there is no information on the effect of organic matter on mineralogical changes in micaceous minerals....

Formation of clay minerals is affected by soil forming factors which in turn play an important role in soil management. The aim of the present research was to study genesis, classification, and clay mineralogy of Koshkooiyeh-Anar soils. Four representative pedons were studied for physicochemical and clay mineralogy analyses. Gypsic, salic, and natric were among the diagnostic horizons that have...
